Crispy tofu wrap

Crispy tofu wrap is one of the best recipes to make if you are looking to increase your protein intake. One thing I deficiently did when I went vegan I mastered the art of experimenting with tofu. I love cooking with tofu since it is so versatile, basically you can season it with whatever you like and use any cooking method, bake, grill, fry, etc.

The neutral taste of tofu allows it to absorb any flavours that you prefer to use for marinating and thats something that will make things much easier in the kitchen.

I have talked a lot about tofu in my videos and blogs since it is considered one of the best plant based protein sources. Its a fantastic substitute for meat and it has a low fat content. Low in saturated fat and cholesterol free is something that can benefit many people and not only vegans.

This crispy tofu wrap reminds me of shawarma for some reason, I honestly can not remember when I last had it but this wrap is a game changer.

I made few changed and improvised it but I think there is no right or wrong way of doing this. It has to be something that you love and flavours that you enjoy.

For instance, I’ve used tahini instead of vegan mayo for couple of reasons. First, tahini is very high on protein which makes this recipe richer in terms of protein content. Second, the sesame oil is one of the healthiest monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats that includes omega-6 fatty acids.

I will not get too much into details but let’s say that I will gladly use tahini in my recipes.

Ingredients:

  • 1 block of firm tofu (grated)
  • 1/2 cups of tahini
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 2 tbsp chili sauce (if you like spicy, if not use less)
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tsp chili flakes or powder
  • Sea salt to taste
  • Fresh finely chopped chives
  • Tomato and lettuce to go in the wrap
  • Tortilla bread

Instructions to make crispy tofu wrap

1- Start by grating the firm tofu. We will cook the tofu in the oven but before it goes in the oven we will need to season it with paprika, chili flakes and sea salt. Drizzle some extra virgin olive oil on it and place it in the oven on 180°C for 20 to 25 minutes to get it crispy and golden.

2- In a small bowl whisk together the tahini, chili sauce, mustard , paprika, oregano, chili flakes and fresh herbs and mix it well to get a smooth and creamy texture.

3- Get the tofu out of the oven and when it cools down slightly mix it with the sauce.

4- Get the tortillas bread and add some lettuce and tomatoes and add the tofu mix and roll up the tortillas tightly to create a wrap.

This step is optional but I pan fried the wrap to get crispy bread and this is how I prefer to have mine. You can just eat and enjoy it as is or make it more crispy.

Enjoy this healthy and super delicious crispy wrap.
